A dazzling tour of binoculars: Guide to Canis Major

For observers who want to use binoculars to view the sky, Canis Major provides a set of viewing points, mainly including three open clusters. Sirius is 4 degrees south of the star, and ordinary binoculars allow you to see both objects in the same field of view. This makes the 4.5 open cluster one of the most easily discovered deep space objects for beginners. It’s more than 250 times as far away from the earth as Sirius, though it’s more than 250 times as far away as the earth’s star. Still, the cluster is a good viewing spot, with its brightest parts visible even in suburban light pollution. Under the original conditions, M41 is a brilliant constellation. One of the best views I saw was a sultry February night in Costa Rica. The observation point is at 10 degrees north latitude, which places Canis Major at a very high position, and I see all the brilliance of this cluster. The search for collider M41 is the only Messier object in Canis Major, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing more to see. To the south of Canis Major’s hind legs, you’ll find an attractive pair of open clusters with collinder catalog numbers on them. You might think that any object that is too obscure to be rated m or NGC is beyond the reach of binoculars. This is not the case. Aim at eta in class 2.4, then move the star to the northeast edge of the field of view – the Collins cluster will enter the field of view from the lower right. Of these two clusters, the most open cluster is the collinear 132 cluster. It is a light and free cluster of more than 10 stars, which can be easily distinguished even in small binoculars. CR 132’s brightest star forms a miniature version of the great square of Pegasus in my 10 × 30 image stable binoculars, and it’s easy to parse the cluster. CR 132 is big enough and sparse enough, but if you don’t know where it is, you can ignore it. CR 140 near < / P > < p > is more interesting and attractive. It looks more like a typical open cluster and has a beautiful cluster of stars across a wide range of luminosity. In my 10 × 30 seconds, I see the brightest stars arranged in the shape of the Greek alphabet lambda. I wonder if you can see it. In CR 140’s triangular core, there is a dark cluster of stars that I couldn’t completely distinguish at first, so I needed extra magnification and a 10 × 70s aperture to induce these faint suns into view.
