Apple watch is likely to adopt microled display technology within 3-4 years

This year’s apple watch series 6 is expected to have OLED screens like the previous models, but future models are likely to be Apple products with microled display technology, although it will take three to four years. According to reports, EPISTAR is working to build a factory to produce micro LED displays for future Apple products. < p > < p > according to Li Bingjie, chairman of the board of optoelectronics, the smart watch will be the first major application of micro led, and it is possible to realize batch application in 3-4 years. < p > < p > Li Bingjie pointed out that wafer optoelectronics has overcome the difficulties of mass production transfer and other micro led technologies, and is expected to achieve reliable production capacity within 2-3 years, and launch terminal market applications in 3-4 years. < p > < p > it is reported that Apple will invest US $330 million in Taiwan’s microfoled plant to produce displays for future iPhones, iPads, macbooks and other devices. For PCB substrate with minimum size of 50-100 μ m, micro led with size of 20-50 μ m is too small, so glass substrate is adopted. Taiwan LCD panel maker Youda optoelectronics will provide glass substrates for displays, and wafer optics is said to be focusing on improving the yield of micro led epitaxy and reducing the cost of large-scale transfer. < / P > < p > microled screens have several advantages over LCD and OLED displays, including thinner and more energy-efficient. For example, the power consumption of micro LED screen is only one tenth of that of LCD display, and the color saturation is close to that of OLED. In addition, microleds can support higher brightness, higher dynamic range and wider color gamut, while achieving faster update speed, wider viewing angle and lower power consumption. < / P > < p > due to the difficulty in the development of microled technology, it is expected that early design will rely on mini LED which is between traditional LED and microled technology. However, according to previous reports, apple still considers microled technology the top priority;. < / P > < p > it is reported that Apple has been testing Apple watch prototypes with microled displays since 2017. Although early rumors suggested that the apple watch with microled displays could be launched as early as 2020, a whistleblower said in May that this year’s apple watch series 6 will use the same OLED display as the previous model, which poured cold water on this prediction.
