Galaxy and Andromeda seen from Earth

From Hubble radio. Scientists have been using Hubble’s observations to predict the future of Andromeda and the Milky way, wondering what would happen to earth when the two galaxies collide. By predicting the movement of Andromeda’s star over the next eight billion years, astronomers now know its path through space. A computer model based on Hubble observations shows how the two galaxies will collide in about four billion years, and it’s coming towards us! Andromeda galaxy is about 2.2 million light-years away from earth and is the nearest spiral galaxy to our own galaxy. Astronomers have known for about a century that it’s moving toward us, but it’s not clear whether the two galaxies will actually collide, or they may simply cross each other. Now, a team of astronomers is trying to solve this problem by observing the motion of stars in the Andromeda Galaxy through the Hubble Space Telescope. < / P > < p > we want to find out how Andromeda travels through space. To do this, we measured the positions of Andromeda’s stars relative to their background galaxies. They were in one place in 2002, they were in a slightly different place in 2010. This allows us to measure this movement over eight years. < / P > < p > this motion is actually very small, even when you look at the clear images from the Hubble telescope, the human eye can’t see it. However, complex image analysis reveals tiny movements that allow scientists to predict the future. < / P > < p > based on these findings, it is finally possible to show what will happen to the Milky way in the next 8 billion years, as galaxies drift closer and closer, then collide and gradually merge into a single, larger, elliptical, red star galaxy. But in fact, the solar system should be able to survive this massive impact. The reason we don’t think the collision between the Milky way and Andromeda will have much impact on our solar system is that the space in the galaxy is basically empty. < / P > < p > even if there are 100 billion stars in our galaxy and Andromeda, the distance between these stars is very far away. So, if two galaxies do collide, all stars will basically pass through each other’s gaps, and the probability of two stars colliding with each other is really very, very small. So it’s very unlikely that our solar system will be directly impacted by another star, such as Andromeda. < / P > < p > If life still exists on earth when this happens, the sky will change dramatically. Now they’re going to be very slow, because cosmic galaxies change on a very long time scale. So you have to think, millions of years later, even in millions of years, we will see great changes. If we wait a few billion years, Andromeda will be huge in the sky. It’s going to be as big as our galaxy, because we’re going to be very close to it. When we merge the two elliptical galaxies in Andromeda, it will look more like an elliptical galaxy. As a result, the sun, born in the Milky way about 5 billion years ago, will end its life in a new orbit and become part of a new galaxy. The Galactic collision between Andromeda and the Milky way is expected to take place in the Milky way within 4.5 billion years. The stars in both galaxies are very far away and are unlikely to collide. Some stars will be ejected from the resulting galaxies, known as milkomeda or mikdromeda. The Andromeda galaxy contains about 1 trillion stars, and the Milky way contains about 300 billion stars. However, due to the huge distance between the stars, the probability of two stars colliding is negligible. For example, the nearest star to the sun is the Centaurus near earth, which is about 4.2 light-years or 30 million times the diameter of the sun. If the sun is a ping-pong ball, Centaurus will be a pea 1100 kilometers away, and the Milky way is about 30 million kilometers wide. Although most of the stars are concentrated in the center of each galaxy, the average distance between stars is still 160 billion kilometers.
