IOS 14: performance and privacy protection

Editor’s note: as we all know, most of the smartphone reviews are now written by editors of professional websites. They have rich experience in playing machine, skillful in evaluation and testing, and are good at presenting the characteristics of all aspects of the product in an article. However, today, the “evaluation” we received from Sanyi life is from a senior but not professional mobile phone enthusiast. After decades of experience in playing with the computer, but never contacted the TA of iPhone, after the first time I used iPhone 11 with ios14, I was unable to help myself. I sent us this experience report written by ourselves. Good news! I am a slightly special smartphone user. Why is it special? First of all, as a “pentic” post-90s, I may have been in touch with digital products much earlier than most of my peers. As early as the 1990s, I was just in primary school, I had used Compaq workstation, and mastered the skills of early operating systems such as DOS 3.2 and windows 95. That is why I have always been curious about new technology and digital products. But although I had my first smartphone around 2007 – dopda D600, which uses Windows Mobile, and I have purchased and contacted phones including Linux mobile, Saiban, Android and even tizen. But in the decade long experience of playing with the machine, Apple’s iPhone is a completely unfamiliar concept to me. Why didn’t I have an iPhone before? Now, it may come from a kind of counter reaction that thinks “geek”. To be honest, it is because the iPhone is too popular and too common, but it makes me feel that it is not “personality” enough, so many times I miss the opportunity to experience the IOS ecology. It is good that in 2020, when the time comes, such promotions as “second kill day” of Apple products of JD have basically received hundreds of yuan to thousands of yuan preferential policies for the whole line of iPhone. Among them, the entry-level iPhone 11 of the iPhone 11 series costs only 4500 yuan after discount, even cheaper with some Android flagship models, which can be said to be very cost-effective. Under the circumstances of little hesitation, I started my first iPhone with great curiosity and expectation, and upgraded the latest IOS 14 directly after I got the iPhone 11. After a period of use, I found myself not only used to IOS 14, but also from this latest mobile operating system, I really understand why the iPhone is so popular. As early as June when apple just announced IOS 14, it was said by multimedia and players that Apple’s new system became more Android. To be honest, I was proud of this news for the first time as an old Android player. After all, if IOS really “pays tribute” to Android’s interface design, isn’t it proving that Android’s route has been more correct over the years? With this feeling, I lit iPhone 11, which was upgraded to IOS 14 for the first time. However, what I saw at first was still the traditional IOS interface: the negative screen is a small plug-in, and from the beginning of the home page, there are neat application icons, until I press the main page for a long time

Emmmm…… Don’t say that IOS 14 has changed the plug-in to any location on the desktop, and it really looks a bit like the classic Android interface style at first glance. For users like me who have used Android for at least ten years, it is really a little more cordial, but if only by this change, IOS is “learning Android”, which is a little too general. It is true that, even if it is not an old IOS user, I know that in the early days, Android did not put the app icon directly on the desktop. The “application drawer” similar to the windows start menu is the real official style of Android UI. Now we are familiar with the Android desktop with icons, which is actually the design of the third-party magic reform system from IOS. For example, on IOS 14, I found that the notification bar and control center interface were displayed from the left and right of the screen. This is not a small difference from the operation logic of the original Android system, but it is just “face-to-face” with some third-party magic reform system. But just a few years ago, the control center that the older version of IOS system exhaled from the bottom up was one of the most adorable designs for magic Android. In addition to this, in IOS 14. I noticed that the album brought by the system will automatically select high-quality photos for highlighting and staggering layout; while all app will show a spiral scale transition animation when opening and exiting. These two designs “exactly” are also one of the highlights of the new version of magic transformation Android of many manufacturers in 2020. What does this mean? To be honest, it’s because I’ve been in touch with Google mobile operating system players since Android 1.x, so I can understand how many times Android, especially the deeply customized Android system in China, has “paid homage” to IOS in the past few years. By contrast, IOS 14’s tweaking on the plug-in is nothing even if it’s really inspired by Android. Of course, I admit that IOS 14 is a little more original than most young Android users think. But it doesn’t mean that all of its UI designs are perfect in my opinion. For example, although the new Siri is very useful, once Siri is enabled, the result of long pressing the power key on the iPhone will only call Siri out – this makes me a person who is used to the logic of “calling out voice assistant by 1 second and shutting down for 3 seconds” on Android really feels very uncomfortable. Even later I was told that iPhone can now call out the power off interface through “long press volume + power key”, but the logic design of “press the power button, but it can not play the role of power supply”, which is really incomprehensible. As we all know, Internet thinking has become a treasure of product management for today’s smartphone manufacturers. In the end, the so-called “Internet thinking” is actually that the machine itself makes less money, and then it can earn more and more long-term profits by paying for various content ecology and selling related products. In fact, from the perspective of personal, I think “Internet thinking” is not a problem. After all, in this copyright era, it is a natural behavior to pay for the authentic version of software or services to enjoy high quality software or services. But the question is, can the quality of the paid content provided by smartphone manufacturers convince users that the value of the money is? At this point, I have to say that Apple has given me a big surprise. First, apple music that IOS brings is probably one of the most sincere content services I’ve ever seen on the phone. And not to mention that the standard price of RMB 10 per month is lower than that of many third-party Music App members. For students’ Party and family users, apple even provides a huge extra discount: the former only needs 5 yuan per month, and the latter can share up to 6 accounts with a price of 15 yuan / month, which is equivalent to the minimum of 2.5 yuan per month. It is different from the other way that many third-party music apps often have VIP songs and paid songs with extra money, or integrate a bunch of community, video, shopping and other messy functions in the program that is clearly listening to songs. Apple Music treats all users equally. This means that even as like as two peas, the number of songs that users can enjoy at home, which is 2.5 yuan per month, and the sound quality are exactly the same as that of the standard user who pays 10 yuan per month. Not only do you have any options that require extra money, even users like me who first used Apple music can enjoy free trials for up to three months – three months, and you can change other music apps, which is not worth tens of dollars? It is said that, in addition to Apple Music, which is online in price and sound quality, Apple’s ecology is the same as other brands of smartphones, including its app store, cloud backup and IOT devices. I can’t experience homekit smart devices because they don’t have them at home, but IOS On the one hand, it may be the most advanced mobile phone backup I have used so far. On the other hand, Apple has imposed many restrictions on its functions, which really makes me a little confused in the actual use of the cloud backup function. Why do I say that? You know, before I use iPhone 11 this time, as a loyal Android user, I have used Google account backup function on Android for many years. Although it can completely back up the necessary information such as contacts, SMS, photos and installed applications on mobile phones, it can not record the account number in the application, and the backup and restore speed is extremely slow. As for the in machine backup function of mobile phone manufacturer, although the backup integrity will be higher, there is no good solution to the problem of slow backup and restore and large space for backup files. By contrast, Apple’s icloud is the best solution I have seen so far, in terms of backup speed, size control of backup files, and backup integrity. I have this iPhone with more than a week of third-party software installed For example, the cloud space used for backup is about 500MB. In the home network environment, the whole machine backup can be completed almost instantly. After the mobile phone data is removed, the complete data restore with application can be achieved when restoring from the cloud – almost the time point before the backup is almost a magic experience. However, while the backup speed is very fast and the space of backup files is very small, there are two settings that I can’t adapt to in IOS backup and restore. One is that it can only perform restore when the system is initialized. Once the hand is skipped quickly, it will not be able to restore any backup archive after entering the system – the restore function can only run again unless the system is initialized again. In other words, during the period between skipping restore and initializing the system again, all the messages I received, the calls I made, and so on, were actually no longer available. The other thing is that I found that IOS 13, which comes with iPhone 11, can’t read the cloud backup files of IOS 14. This means that if you change your IOS 14 device in the future, the contacts, software, and so on that you backed up on it will not be able to import back into the iPhone that uses the old system. Although this limitation is not technically incomprehensible, similar circumstances are found
